A land of dramatic contrasts, Sicily is a continual discovery, just like Borgo Alveria, a farm stay set in the enchanting countryside of Noto Antica, a town which was raised to the ground by the earthquake of 1693, and Noto, the city which replaced it, and which is famous throughout the world for its magnificent Sicilian Baroque architecture.
Borgo Alveria was constructed on the site of a 15th century monastery, also destroyed by the earthquake. Today each stone of each and every room, tells a tale of times past, whilst celebrating the building's transformation into a contemporary country house, which is home to an extravagant concoction of Sicilian antiques, designer furniture, family heirlooms and modern technology.
The romantic charm of Borgo Alveria lies in the combination of the thick, exposed stone walls of Sicily's old farmhouses and sleek contemporary decor. An impressive stone archway divides the farmhouse, which has been converted into a restaurant, from the three 18th century buildings in which the farm stay's guest accommodation has been created. Silk cushions, linen curtains, Kartell lights, antique mirrors, floor tiles made from local lava stone and Japanese bathtubs complete with water features: these are just some of the exclusive touches guests can expect to find in Borgo Alveria's individually appointed bedrooms, the majority of which have gorgeous views over the gardens and the 19 hectares of farming estate.
At Borgo Alveria, guests enjoy the relaxing rhythm of life in the Sicilian countryside as they bathe in the sunshine by the pool or stroll through the fragrant gardens, stopping to relax in the shade of the centuries old olive and carob trees. Walkers and cyclists will want to head into the surrounding countryside, following the little lanes and footpaths which wind their way across the sun baked landscapes.
The aromas of Sicily's fabulous traditional cuisine fill the kitchen and dining room of Borgo Alveria's gourmet restaurant. The talented young chef, David, pupil of the great Gualtiero Marchesi, takes his inspiration from age-old family recipes, to create tantalizing contemporary dishes prepared with the finest of locally grown organic ingredients.
Three good reasons
- The sundrenched Sicilian countryside just outside the city of Noto.
- A refreshingly contemporary Country House.
- The delicious gourmet Mediterranean cuisine.
Location Borgo Alveria
Whilst many will be familiar with Noto, the baroque city famous for its 16th and 17th century architectural masterpieces, fewer will have heard of Noto Antica, the town destroyed by the earthquake which devastated much of southeast Sicily in 1693. It is here, on the ruins of an old monastery, in the sunny Sicilian countryside only 10kms away from Noto, that the farm stay Borgo Alveria has been created. The archeological area of Noto Antica is a mere 700 meters away from the country house. In this area, strategically located between Siracusa, Ragusa and Capo Passero (the southernmost point of Sicily), that the greater part of the island's tourist attractions can be found: places like Modica, Scicli, the Cava Grande Nature Reserve, the Vendicari wildlife oasis and the splendid beaches which make the Bay of Noto one of Sicily's most loved seaside resorts.
