Umbria Narni

From a position high above the valleys, a city which was the birthplace of many a famous name.

The origins of Narni are ancient, dating back to the Neolithic period. It was once stronghold of the Romans due to its strategic position and so not surprisingly, Narni is situated on the Via Flaminia.

This place is noteworthy for its connection to personalities of great historical and artistic importance who all lived here, such as the renaissance artists Ghirlandaio, Vecchietta, Rossellino, Antoniazzo Romano, Spagna, Vignola, Sangallo and Scalza. There are numerous frescoes of the coronation of the virgin, the stigma of St Francis and the annunciation. Many other famous names were born at Narni, such as Beata Lucia, Berardo Eroli, Gattamelata, Galeotto Marzio, Cassio da Narni and the Roman Emporor Cocceio Nerva.

Narni is also a treasure trove of historical monuments: the Romanesque Cathedral, the Church of St Francis, Palazzo dei Priori, the Crypt of St Domenico, the ancient Church of St Domenico, the Church of St Restituta, the Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Scotti, the Gardens of St Bernardo, the Convent of St Agostino, the Church of St Margherita, with an interesting cycle of frescoes attributed to Pomarancio.
