Hotels to remember: Itri

Itri: introduction

Itri Hotel

Three things to do in Itri

  1. Explore the Monti Aurunci - on foot or mountain bike
  2. Swim in the pretty little bay of Punta Cetarola
  3. Taste the town's excellent cheese and olive oil

Halfway between Naples and Rome, the medieval town of Itri was where travelers making their way along the Ancient Roman Via Appia once used to rest. Itri was the home town of Fra Diavolo, a famous guerrilla leader who resisted the French occupation of Naples and after whom one of the town's best restaurants is named.

The three towered castle, Itri's most important tourist attraction, dominates the surrounding landscape from the heights of its hilltop position.

A great all-year-round destination, Itri is a nature lover's paradise: close to the Aurunci Mountains and the Regional Park which provides the perfect terrain for mountain bikers, trekkers and climbers.

Sea lover? Itri lies within easy reach of Punta Cetarola. This pretty pebble beach, between Gaeta and Sperlonga, is one of the most beautiful of all those on the coast of Lazio.

If a day by the sea has given you an appetite, pop into one of the typical trattorias in and around Itri to sample the area's mozzarella di bufala, salsiccia itrana, extra virgin olive oil and cacio marzolino: a sheep's cheese made with the milk produced exclusively in the month of March!
