The best known dish has to be the bistecca alla fiorentina, but panforte, bollito, finocchiona and pappardelle are also firm favourites with locals and visitors alike. Soups are popular, prepared with peas, archichokes, cabbage and bread and one should never forget the Pappa al Pomodoro, a surprisingly simple dish (made primarily from bread and tomato) yet gloriously rich and full of intense flavour.

The Tuscan D.O.C.G wines are known throughout the world. Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti, and Nobile di Montepulciano are among the finest, although the list of quality wines produced in the region is almost endless .
