Calabria Restaurants

The best known Calabrian dish has to be mustica, also called mestica, caviale dei poveri, , and rosemarina –this “poor-man’s caviar” consists of dried anchovies covered with peperoncino and preserved in oil. First courses include fusili with a ragù made from pork, tomato, and peperoncino, maccaruni – pasta shapes formed by twisting the pasta around a knitting needle, and lasagne. One of the best known soups is the maccu di fave – a puree of broad beans flavoured with pecorino cheese, black pepper, olive oil and licurdia (made with onion and potato). Swordfish pan-fried with olives and capers and wrapped around a filling of mozzarella, ham, and herbs is another delicacy. The bagnarese and colsamoriglio are also superb. Among the delicious desserts one finds chocolate cookies called mostaccioli, iced torrone, la cubbiate, and figs stuffed with almonds.

Cirò, Savuto, Sant’Anna di Isola Capo Rizzuto, Donnicic, Greco di Bianco, Pollino, Lamezia, and Melissa are the Calabrian D.O.C. wines.
