Massa Martana: introduction

Massa Martana Hotel

A Roman bridge dating back to the 1st century A.D, announces our arrival at Massa Martana. This ancient medieval town, framed by the nearby Martani Mountain range, was for centuries ably protected by its sturdy 8th century perimeter wall. Alas, the wall was unable to defend the town from the devastating earthquake which shook much of Umbria in 1997 and ten years of extensive restoration work were required before the old town was 'reopened'.

The parish church of San Felice dominates the main piazza whilst, just a few meters away, we find the beautiful church of St Sebastian and the 16th century Palazzo Comunale with bell tower.

Just outside the town, there are a number of interesting religious buildings. Particularly worthy of mention is the Church of Santa Maria in Pantano. Dating back to the 7th century, the church is considered to be one of the oldest examples of Umbrian Romanesque. The 9th century Abbey of San Fidenzio and Terenzio is another medieval construction of great impact. The countryside of Massa Martana is dotted with numerous castles and carpeted by magnificent forests of holm oak and Aleppo pine.
