Sardinia - Costa Smeralda
It is thanks to its sea that the Emerald coast gained its name, a sea of rare beauty and spectacular emerald tones. Its importance on a tourist level and its subsequent development began in the 1950's and 60's, when a group of investors and international industrialists decided to buy expanses of coastland in the districts of Olbia and Arzachena, in the north of the Gallura. Since then the growth of the area has been continuous and the Emerald coast has become an exclusive tourist destination thanks also to the great care given to protecting the natural landscape. In fact, on the Emerald coast, the landscape is considered the most precious element to protect and for this reason strict rules apply so as to guarantee that the environment remains unspoilt. The capital of the emerald coast is Porto Cervo known as the 'invisible city' in virtue of its architecture in perfect harmony with the natural landscape. Three hotels have become symbolic with the Emerald Coast: Hotel Cervo, Hotel Pitrizza and Hotel Cala di Volpe.
