The major lyric theatre of Naples, it was entitled to San Carlo as homage to Charles of Borbone, who ordered its realization in 1737. Completed in few months, it was inaugurated by the same King the 4 of November; in that occasion was put a work made by Domenico Sarro. In 1816 a violent fire damaged the "Royal Theatre", but also in this case the works, directed by the architect and manager set designer Nicolini, they were completed in record time.
The monumental façade is very beautiful with a first level in grey ashlar and a second one articulated by ionic columns, dominated by a grandiose tympanum and by high-reliefs. The interior is suggestive, the stalls and the stages, are dominated to the centre by the Royal Stage, with the symbol of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies while the ceiling was frescoed by Cammarota with scenes of the "Parnaso". Among its conductors the Theatre San Carlo had Donizetti and Rossini. The orchestra of San Carlo has always been occupied in tournée applauded all over the world.
