The second world war resulted in serious damage to the city of Naples and the Grand Hotel Vesuvio was just one of the buildings to be almost completely destroyed in heavy bombing raids. In the immediate post war years, the hotel was rebuilt and two additional floors were added before the Grand Hotel Vesuvius' grand reopening in 1950.
