Eremo di S. M. Maddalena Historical Residences
The Hermitage of Saint Mary Magdalene (l'eremo di S.M Maddalena), rests on lush green hillside, just 3kms from the town of Monterosso. The complex, the earliest documentary evidence of which dates back to 1244, was once inhabited by a community of Benedictine monks. In 1327 the monastery, in state of abandon and threatened by ruin, was entrusted by the community of Monterosso to Father Bartholomew of Vicenza, who established the hermitage of which he became rector.
The edifice is comprised of two distinct buildings, the church to the north and the monastery to the south, which are united by a small cloister, the arches of which are supported by slender brick columns.
On the upper floor the original monks' cells are located; now transformed in residential accommodation. The attentive and accurate restoration work of recent years has brought to light the antique splendor of the complex, and led to its conversion in, arguably, the finest historical residence in the Cinque Terre.
The villa of the hermitage of Saint Mary Magdalene is built on 3 levels: the entrance is located on the same level as the cloister, this latter functioning as outside dining and relaxation area in the summer months. On the ground floor there is a kitchen, television room with fireplace, two bedrooms with bathroom, and study. A terrace with solarium offer breathtaking views over the surrounding hillside.
A stairway leads up to the first floor where there is a spacious living area and dining room overlooking the gardens and the enchanting landscape of the Cinque Terre. On the second floor there are 2 double rooms, a bathroom with shower, and a large storage room. The villa is rented on a weekly basis.
In the olive tree strewn gardens next to the Hermitage of Saint Mary Magdalene, there is a magnificent swimming pool, from where to enjoy stunning views out towards the sea. At the disposal of guests staying at the villa there is a scooter, offering a decidedly Italian form of transport with which to reach the center of Monterosso.
The villa is not available for partial rent. 1 week minimum stay required.
