Museum Toscanini Sights & Activities
In this small house, situated in one of the poorest districts of the "old Parma", Arturo Toscanini was born on March 25th, 1867.Here he and his family spent no more than one year, packed with other two families. Nowadays this building has been completely restructured, and it hosts the memory museum devoted to the Maestro.
The Museum is a very important place for the tourists that come to Parma, and is a meeting point for music students and enthusiasts from all over the world.
Immediately after the death of Arturo Toscanini the Commune of Parma acquires from the Serventi family the house where he was born, placed in the popular "Oltretorrente" district in 13, R. Tanzi street. The heirs donate to the town various documents (pictures, photos, personal objects...) that could make it possibile to set up a small memory museum.
In March 1967, ten years after the death and one hundred after the birth, with the presence of President Giuseppe Saragat, the Museum is officially inaugurated. It is managed by a member of the Teatro Regio choir, Mr. Mainardi.
In 1983 a big earthquake strikes the town, damaging the House and imposing its closing. In August 1987, after an accurate restoration and a general rearrangement of the documents, the House is newly open to the public, with an audition room for music listening. New donations enrich the Museum, in particular the costume of Jago ("Othello") once belonged to baritone Giuseppe Valdengo, and the "Aureliano Pertile Estate".
