The Virtual Museum of Calabria Catanzaro

The aim of the Virtual Museum is to inform the public about Cultural Property in Calabria. This includes cultural collections housed in different museums of the region and archaeological sites, religious collections found in churches, monuments and etc., which make up a valuable cultural patrimony interesting to tourists, students or general visitors.

Presently the Virtual Museum of Calabria enables one to visit the National Museum of Reggio Calabria and the Archaeological Museum of Sibari.

The programme was developed under the supervision of the Office of the Superintendence of Archaeological works of Calabria. Professionals who worked under the supervision of the Superintendence have provided all the material.

The careful attention given by Superintendent Dr. E. Lattanzi, and by archaeological directors Dr. C. Sabbione (for Reggio) and Dr. Luppino (for Sibari), guarantee the quality of the cultural material contained in the Virtual Museum.

Visitors of the Virtual Museum can tour the museum room by room and admire the showcases that contain the most valuable and meaningful pieces. Each showcase has an information card with title, description and measurements of the objects. Specific theme sections will provide visitors with historical information and the location where a specific piece was discovered. Visitors can also view and study specific finds by entering the database of the virtual museum, no matter in which museum the finds may be located.

The database is a special and powerful tool for the integration and cross-gallery references of the Calabrian cultural collections that are part of the virtual museum of Calabria. By using the research button it is possible to discover cultural collections which have been ignored up to now. The visitor can connect himself directly with the proper museum, and retrieve information on famous objects or works even if its location is unknown.
