The Hotel Villa Cimbrone is in the beautiful hill town of Ravello, situated about midway along the extraordinarily scenic Amalfi Coast. In 1904, the Englishman Lord Grinthorpe, Ernst William Beckett, a connoisseur of art with refined and cultured habits whose social circle included members of London's Bloomsbury Group, purchased the building and its gardens and undertook their restoration, a project he discussed with some of his eminent friends who frequently visited him in Ravello. Among the famous people who were his guests we find such notable figures as Lytton Strachey, E.M. Forster, D.H. Lawrence, John Maynard Keynes, Piaget, Sir Winston Churchill, and the Duke of Kent. Villa Cimbrone was also the place chosen by Greta Garbo and Leopold Stokowsky for their unforgettable encounters.
The historic atmosphere of the Villa Cimbrone hotel's rooms has been carefully preserved as seen in the frescoed vaults, stone fireplaces and floors paved with majolica tiles from Vietri sul Mare, the nearby town famous for its ceramicware. At the same time, they offer all the modern comforts one could desire. The Restaurant, reserved until now for events and weddings, will soon open as restaurant for individual guests, serving cuisine inspired by the great Mediterranean culinary tradition.
